Give Your Vegies A Makeover
Posted on 10 March 2011
We all know that our blokes can be a little reticent when it comes to their vegies – maybe the humble vegetable is not manly enough for them? Or perhaps it has something to do with the flashbacks of their mother forcing them to sit at the table until they’ve eaten all their brussels sprouts – but that’s an entirely different article all together! With the variety of cooking shows on at the moment, there’s also a propensity to fancy up the vegies and make them even less appealing to men.
Traditionally, the way to give them a blokey makeover is to whack the vegetables on the bbq and cook them to the same level of “charcoal” as you would the sausages. Follow this with tomato sauce and you’re good to go.
Barbecues, in reality, are perfect for cooking appealing and delicious vegetables. Simply slice up some potato, sweet potato or pumpkin about ¼ to ½ an inch thick, drizzle them with olive oil adding salt and pepper, or sprinkle with a paprika and salt mix. They will take about 5 minutes on each side to cook.
Carrots work well when cut longways, Mediterranean-style eggplant or zucchini thickly sliced, and your tomatoes halved. Mushrooms can be cooked whole. And don’t forget the onion which can be sliced into rings or crescents. Again, brush with olive oil and add some Italian herbs (either store bought or home grown in your garden if you’re so inclined).
You can cook them on the same plate as the meat, which will add extra flavour to the vegies. If you prefer a mix of flavours in your meal or don’t want to upset your vegetarian friends, a No More BBQ Mess sheet is perfect. This will also save time and hassle when regularly cleaning the barbecue, as it can be hand washed or tossed into the dishwasher. It also requires less oil for cooking!
And if it makes you feel better, we are still searching for a recipe to improve the taste of brussels sprouts, so best not to even try.
